By: Jeanine Cambra The Montessori philosophy of education and materials were developed by Italian physician and teacher, Maria Montessori. Montessori, a pioneer in her own right, was the first female physician in Italy and in 1900 she spent a year working with mentally challenged children. During that time she developed educational materials that made it possible for children thought to be uneducable to learn. Montessori was inspired by her results and when given the opportunity to work with preschool children who weren’t considered to have special needs, she continued to develop her methods and materials. Key components of the Montessori philosophy of education include following the child and his or her needs, peace education, developing independence, and using materials specifically developed to meet the needs of the developmental needs of students in specific planes of development.
